Goals were the order of the weekend in the Premier League as 34 of them went in during the nine games.

There were eight headers, four braces, two sublime hat-tricks and some astonishing strikes along the way.

Bolton salvaged a draw at the Stadium of Light, Arsenal managed a point at Stoke, and Luis Suarez executed a magnificent hat-trick at Carrow Road.

But it is Wigan whose 4-0 statement of intent that sent Newcastle’s race for fourth suffering in the process that deserves chief mentioning.

The Latic’s form of late has been nothing short of superb, even more so considering that they went on a losing streak of eight games from 10th September until 6th November.

That period saw many pundits and experts question Roberto Martinez’s men and write them off staying afloat for another year.

They have recently beaten Liverpool, Arsenal and Man United to get to the position they now occupy; 16th, three points clear of the drop zone.

With Bolton and Aston Villa both having drawn on Saturday, and QPR and Blackburn losing almost lifelessly to Chelsea and Tottenham in London respectively,Wigan have got to start thinking their late form might well be enough for them.

However, they must keep hold of their concentration, because if they lose their next two games they are by no means assured of safety and this win could end up counting for nothing.

Their games should allow them six points. They play a struggling Blackburn at Ewood Park before they face already doomed Wolves at the DW Stadium.

Should they avoid the drop it will be a fantastic recovery, with all thanks going to the players, Roberto Martinez and also Dave Whelan for sticking by the former two all the way.

Super Suarez and fantastic Fernando hit hat-tricks

Two of the league’s most maligned strikers earned themselves very different reprieves this weekend.

Luis Suarez, Fernando Torres and their respective teams had excellent games at the weekend.

Suarez’s was probably a better hat-trick with three magnificent efforts – one of which will go down in folklore – and his performance was the more match-winning of the two, but this hardly detracts from the brilliant finishing Torres displayed.

After Suarez’s racism allegations and Torres’ torrid patch of form, both men will be very happy to have their names in the paper for more positive reasons.
