Six things not to miss in Sydney with the warm weather

Six things not to miss in Sydney with the warm weather

The weather is still more than pleasant in Sydney – after all, shoulder seasons are the best time to visit – and we put together six things to do and enjoy in the Aussie capital city that you may not have discovered just yet.

Art Gallery of New South Wales

For the art lovers, or anyone curious about Australian history, this gallery has a large collection of European and Australian art, going from 15th-century paintings to the more contemporaneous works and the unique indigenous collection. Be ready to find artists like Russell Drysdale, Sidney Nolan and plenty of female ones too.

Parramatta

Paramatta is a lively area, with events ranging from the Tropfest to the Parramasala, a celebration of multiculturalism focused on South and Southeast Asia. This part of town is not only a cultural hub, it has also become a business precinct catering for every need. Like many other suburbs in Sydney, Parramatta owns some natural spaces worth the visit. Our favourite is its natural reserve in the north area: Lake Parramatta.

West Head National Park

Fortunately, Parramatta is far from being the only location where nature can be embraced and enjoyed near Sydney. West Head, situated in the central area of the wider Ku-ring-gai National Park, is a fascinating place to take a walk, refresh yourself in the beach and get to know more about the Aboriginal origins of this history-enriched country.

Ciccone and Sons Gelateria

Since the weather is still so nice, it should be mentioned where to get everyone’s favourite ice cream: gelato. This small shop sits on Redfern’s Regent Street, among second-hand shops and fruit stalls. The decoration is full of vintage pieces that give the space an authentic Italian look. The menu changes daily and it’s fashionably hand-written, giving it a further artisan feel; it’s a traditional gelato maker, don’t miss it if you’re around and looking for very good ice cream.

Justice and Police Museum

All types of artefacts that were used to commit front page-worthy crimes can be found in this museum. If you are after unusual and alternative ideas, this is definitely an interesting destination.

Cockatoo Island

Closing the list is another unusual recommendation: an island in the midst of Sydney Harbour. Formerly a space for convicts and shipbuilders, Cockatoo is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Frozen in time, this island contains pieces of history that have remained intact for centuries. On top of being a historical site, it’s often used for outdoor cultural activities such as concerts and the Biennale of Sydney.
