The Last Tree tells the story of Femi, a British boy of Nigerian Heritage whose life is turned upside-down when his birth mother comes to reclaim him, taking him away from a happy childhood under foster care in rural Lincolnshire and forcing him to move into the deprived suburbs of South London. Director Shola Amoo’s semi-autobiographical coming-of-age tale tracks the protagonist as he ages from a confident 11-year-old (Tai Golding), into a street-savvy teenager (Sam Adewumni).

We caught up with Amoo, Golding and Adewumni during Sundance London 2019 at the film’s premiere.

The director talked to us about how his filmmaking technique explores the idea of subversion

Golding discussed his excitement in obtaining the role and how the team became like a family to him.

Adewumni explained how the complexity of the character originally stems from the authenticity of the script.
