An interview with Apollo 11 director Todd Douglas Miller and archive producer Stephen Slater

Apollo 11 has been produced by CNN Films to mark the moon landing’s 50th anniversary. Director/editor Todd Douglas Miller’s (Dinosaur 13) thrilling documentary reveals the twists and turns of NASA’s iconic lunar mission, when the crew of Apollo 11 blasted from The Kennedy Space Centre Florida, Earth, and on 20th July 1969 landed on the moon, where Neil Armstrong uttered the now immortalised words “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”.

With unprecedented access to and crafted from over 10,000 hours of NASA footage this critically acclaimed documentary takes its audience inside this historic event like never before, celebrating one of mankind’s greatest achievements.

Ahead of Apollo 11’s screening at Sundance London, we sat down with director Todd Douglas Miller and archival producer Stephen Slater (Destination Titan) to discuss their passion for filmmaking, how the discovery of a treasure trove of previously unseen NASA footage shaped the creation process, their idols and influences, as well as their favourite sequences from this groundbreaking film.
