For many of us, the Covid-19 outbreak has unleashed an overwhelming desire for cleanliness, in attempt to keep not only viruses, but all types of harmful bacteria, at bay.

Until now, sanitising everyday items, such as beauty tools, has often been overlooked. However, considering these products harbour pathogens, keeping them clean is crucial.

Lewis Ames of leading UK hand sanitiser and disinfectant manufacturer, Ocean Free, tells us how to make the most of our cleaning agents.

Hairdryer

“Not only can dust and spray particles from hair products make your hairdryer hazardous, but there have also been high levels of bacteria found on these items. You should aim to clean your hairdryer with a disinfectant wipe as frequently as you use it – between one to three weeks will be effective.”

Straighteners

“The ceramic plates on straighteners harbour pathogens, which could damage your heat tool or even transfer to your hair. It’s best to avoid cleaning with water and use a disinfectant wipe instead.”

Hairbrush

“If you’re someone who carries a hairbrush in your bag, it’s especially important to increase the frequency at which you clean it. Using a disinfectant spray, such as Ocean Free Antiseptic Disinfectant Spray, will remove collected dead skin cells and natural oils from your scalp, as well as product build-up.”

Nail scissors

“Nail scissors can be a great place for fungal spores and bacteria to live, both from the dirt under our nails and wet surfaces in the bathroom. For that reason, you should aim to clean scissors before each use.”

Jade roller

“Jade is a porous stone that attracts pathogens. Therefore, applicators should be sterilised on a regular basis, so there’s no chance of spreading these germs to your skin. Avoid strong chemicals and opt for an alcohol-free wipe, such as Ocean Free Disinfection Wipes.”

Razor

“We know that kitchen sponges are one of the main culprits for harbouring bacteria, due to their moisture, so it’s hardly surprising your razor can collect microbes just as easily. Rinse it from blade to handle after you shower, then use a disinfectant wipe to kill any bacteria, and leave to dry away from any damp surfaces.”

Tweezers

“Cleaning your tweezers is equally important to cleaning your teeth. Since they are used around the eyes, tweezers could cause an infection if not properly cared for. A disinfectant wipe would effectively remove harmful entities.”

Eyelash curlers

“You should use a disinfectant wipe on your eyelash curlers to remove make-up. Try to clean the applicator weekly or, for sensitive eyes, after each use. If you don’t have wipes, you could use a clean cloth with the Ocean Free Antiseptic Disinfectant Spray.”
