“I just wanted to make one of those movies that someone might sneak downstairs to watch”: Jamie Patterson, Skye Lourie and George Webster on God’s Petting You

The latest from prolific Brighton-based filmmaker Jamie Patterson, God’s Petting You, is a particularly English pulp fiction. Set in the lurid underworld of the director’s beloved home city, its genre mechanisms represent a riff on the hardboiled American crime tropes from which the likes of Quentin Tarantino have drawn, repackaging them in a meeting of humour and violence that is quintessentially our side of the Atlantic. The film’s plot follows Charlie (George Webster), a functioning heroin addict, who uses Addicts Anonymous meetings to meet and acquire the services of his dealer. At one of the meetings, he meets a sex addict known only as Tattoo Girl (Skye Lourie), with whom he plans an elaborate, foolhardy heist involving her abusive porn star boyfriend.

The Upcoming had the fortune to speak with Patterson, alongside the film’s two stars, about the project, the tight schedule under which they worked and the central characters of Charlie and Tattoo Girl.
