Lewis Hamilton proved a near perfect pole-to-flag race to claim the Italian GP, ahead of Sauber’s Sergio Perez and Championship leader Fernando Alonso.

Hamilton was hardly tested during the race, which he started just ahead of team-mate Jenson Button and lost the lead just once during a brief pit stop.

Perez, who started 12th on the grid, took advantage of a different race strategy and a free choice of tyres to overtake Alonso with seven laps to go.

Alonso himself had started 10th on the grid after he was handed a grid penalty for a technical problem on his Ferrari, but in front of the Ferrari president, Alonso did a great job to consolidate his Championship lead to 37 points ahead of Hamilton.

“It was pretty trouble free; I don’t think I had any problems,” said Hamilton.

“The guys did a great job, [and I] got a great start for once, so very happy with that.”

“Very unfortunate for Jenson because we were one-two at the time and it would have been fantastic to have been first and second.”

Hamilton’s victory means he joins Alonso as the only driver to win three races this season, and will have momentum going into the Asian sector of this year’s race calendar.
