McIlroy continues historic run

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy has claimed his third big tournament in his last four starts.

The third leg of the Fed Ex Cup play-offs, The BMW Championship, is now in the hands of the 23-year-old after firing a final round 67, becoming the first man since Tiger Woods in 2009 to claim back-to-back wins on tour.

The world number one overtook overnight leaders Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh who fell apart on the back nine.

He also held off other superstars to compete with Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson, Adam Scott and the joint runner-up Lee Westwood.

The lead changed multiple times on the star-studded leader board on the front nine; Dustin Johnson chipped in for eagle on the par five, ninth to set up a four-way tie up the top alongside Mickelson, McIlroy and Westwood.

Rory took the lead outright at the turn after two putting for birdie on nine and backing it up on the tenth after hitting his approach to five feet.

The big names could not match McIlroy’s game down the stretch, as they all failed to put much pressure on him, leaving Northern Ireland’s golden boy to win another tournament.
