“It all culminates in a very Fargo-esque, Coen brothers sort of ending”: Scoot McNairy on Blood for Dust

Set in 1992, Rod Blackhurst’s Blood for Dust follows Cliff (Scoot McNairy), a desperate salesman pulled into drug running by his former colleague Ricky (Kit Harington) to save his family from financial ruin during Montana’s brutal winter. The neo-noir-tinged crime thriller delivers a chilling exploration of survival and moral collapse, brought to life through Justin Derry’s stark cinematography, which echoes the story’s bleak, atmospheric tone. McNairy’s gripping portrayal of a man unravelling under guilt and despair juxtaposes Harington’s volatile charm. While the film follows familiar genre beats, its emotional depth and striking direction bring a fresh edge to a gripping tale of survival.

Ahead of Blood for Dust’s digital release, McNairy shared with The Upcoming that he was initially drawn to the role of Cliff because his journey poignantly reflects the struggles faced by middle America in recent years. Noting that his understanding of Cliff’s experience as a salesman during that precarious time was deeply influenced by his own father, who worked in a field closely tied to the financial sector in the 90s, McNairy further discussed how the film’s themes mirror broader societal issues, Rod Blackhurst’s nuanced direction and more.
