“Obviously, we try to tell stories that are bigger than just in the gaming world”: Megan Ganz, Ashly Burch, Danny Pudi, Imani Hakim, Jessie Ennis, Naomi Ekperigin, Charlotte Nicdao and David Hornsby on Mythic Quest season four

A look into the day-to-day creative shenanigans of video game development, as well as the realistic and corporate side of the industry, Mythic Quest is back with another fun-filled season full of mischief, laughter and absolute chaos. Created by and starring It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Rob McElhenney, the series follows an eccentric group of people working on Mythic Quest, showcasing the behind-the-scenes process of working on a video game from the ground up, all the little intricacies involved in such an endeavour and the problems that can arise from it. From workplace relationships and inappropriate content made by players to the question of AI within the creative industry, Mythic Quest season four dives deeper into its established cast of charismatic characters, with progression and change within different relationship dynamics, and the introduction of new faces.

The Upcoming had the pleasure of catching up with writer Megan Ganz and actor Ashly Burch ahead of the show landing on Apple TV+. Ganz discussed Ubisoft’s very important role in the creative process of the show – from highlighting developments and challenges faced by the gaming industry to providing an accurate representation of the corporate side of developing games – and her favourite episode to film this season. Burch on the other hand talked about the development of her character Rachel and the progression of Rachel’s relationship with Dana as the two move forward in their careers.

We also spoke with Danny Pudi and Imani Hakim, who play Brad and Dana respectively, who highlighted the importance of the dynamic between their two characters, with Brad’s pragmatic and monetising tendencies contrasting with Dana’s creativity, while at the same time bringing out the villainess energy within her.

Actors Jessie Ennis and Naomi Ekperigin chimed in with comments about their characters’ developments throughout Mythic Quest. Ekperigin specifically discussed her elevated role these past two seasons and seeing an unexpected side to Carol. Ennis covers, on her end, how working with different characters and assisting them with their ludicrous ideas has benefitted Jo throughout the series.

Finally, Charlotte Nicdao and David Hornsby dug deeper into the creative process of making the show, with Hornsby exploring the list of topics they wanted to cover and how they go about tackling specific subject matters. Nicdao discussed directing Hornsby’s writing and the importance of Filipino representation throughout the series.
