Sophie Morgan Howarth’s strikingly swift rise to stardom as Luvcat is unsurprising to anyone present as she takes the stage at London’s Koko, her biggest headline gig to date. Her artistry marks a win for the theatrical, the gothic, for passionate, intentional and perfectly curated aestheticism and craft, which only doubles when elevated by her live offering. Dressed to the nines in their witchiest attire, adorned head-to-toe in the prints of their choosing – most frequently leopard or checked, now characteristic of her brand and fanbase – the excited punters roar upon Luvcat’s arrival, gripped as she breaks into dramatic opener Lipstick.

With a sole album out to date, Luvcat selects a smattering of tracks from Vicious Delicious, wasting no time moving on to fan favourite Matador. Though composed and fierce on stage, she informs the audience of her gratitude and reminds them that just 18 months ago, she played a vintage shop in London in the very same clothes – a physical manifestation of the recency yet impressive scope of her ascent. More mellow tracks, Alien and Spider follow as Luvcat traverses through a deeply sentimental and often sensual soundscape, shouting out Emma Dilemma herself, who is present in the crowd alongside Attic Girl, opener and long-time collaborator, whose involvement in the show and bespoke choreography only increase over the hour-long set.

The set is punctuated by a cover of My Chemical Romance’s Helena that takes on a new life under Luvcat’s wing, before she and the band launch into three of their hardest hitters to close out. He’s My Man, performed on the balcony with a glass of red wine in hand, succeeds the stirring Blushing, a song which aptly details the culmination of Howarth and the band’s efforts over the years, playing pubs across the city and falling in love along the way.

Wrapping the night up with an encore consisting of the album’s title track and the iconic Dinner @ Brasserie Zédel, Luvcat had fans in the palm of her hand, bringing some much-needed spectacle to a Wednesday night in Camden.
