Covent Garden’s Cato to celebrate National Mint Julep Day with Southern-inspired party and oysters
Covent Garden cocktail bar Cato, also known as The House of Julep, will host a Mint Julep Party next Saturday, in celebration of America’s National Mint Julep Day. The London venue is opening its doors from 3pm on 30th May to mark the occasion dedicated to the bourbon-based Southern American cocktail, with no advance booking required.
The event will feature mint juleps priced at £10, alongside freshly shucked oysters, offering Londoners a taste of Kentucky tradition without leaving the capital. Entry will be on a walk-in basis only, with guests admitted on a first-come, first-served basis.
The bar takes its name from Cato Alexander, a 19th-century African-American tavern keeper who operated a popular roadhouse on the outskirts of New York City in the early 1800s. Alexander, who was born into slavery before being able to buy his freedom, became renowned among travellers and high society for his hospitality, and the mint julep was reportedly his drink of choice. His establishment was considered one of the most fashionable destinations of its era, frequented by writers, politicians and members of New York’s social elite.
The cocktail itself has deep roots in Southern American culture, traditionally associated with the state of Kentucky and the Kentucky Derby, where it has been served as the official drink since 1938. A mint julep typically consists of bourbon, fresh mint, sugar and crushed ice, served in a chilled metal cup.
Cato has positioned itself as a specialist in the London bar scene, with its branding directly referencing the julep tradition. Their pairing of mint juleps with freshly shucked oysters is a classic combination found in historic American drinking establishments, where seafood was commonly served alongside spirits during the 19th century. Those keen to attend Cato’s party this month are reminded that no reservations will be taken.
