The Deadliest Catch heads to Canada
Reality television is often sanitised and dramatised for maximum impact. Yet one show has caught the public’s imagination, mainly due to the sheer real-world danger faced by its cast. The Deadliest Catch follows fishermen and their ships as they try to net the ocean’s bounty for huge profits. More a true-to-life Squid Game than a Married at First Sight affair, it chronicles one of the oldest battles on earth: Man vs nature.
Northern edge green lit
Deadliest Catch has just premiered its 22nd season. Yet news has broken that for the first time, it will go international, and a new series titled Deadliest Catch: Northern Edge has been given the go-ahead.
The deal to create it has been penned between Fremantle Canada and Rogers Sports and Media. A new cast of captains will be followed in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, as they hit the North Atlantic in a bid to land snow crab over eight thrilling episodes. Kale Stockwell, the head of original programming at Rogers Sports and Media, noted that “With Deadliest Catch: Northern Edge, we’re proud to bring this iconic format to Canada as the first international adaptation”.
Deadliest Catch’s popularity
The measure of a show’s cultural impact can be seen as it moves into other media. Deadliest Catch has popped up in some extremely unknown places, including a themed version of Slingo. This is a hybrid of games, where players end up reveal numbers and symbols, which can be crossed off a card. There’s an operator that has this title and a range of other Slingo games: there are several BetParx offers to know, which can also let players try these games without using all their bankroll.
Other games have included outings on both Xbox and PC, along with a mobile game. Deadliest Catch has also spawned several books, both by third parties and autobiographical accounts. Many different televisual spin-offs have also been run before, changing locations and dealing with life onshore.
The real-life dangers
The reality of the show was displayed starkly on screen at the start of the new season. It began with an emotional message from Todd Meadows. He died in February, falling overboard while working and filming for the show, reiterating just how true to life the dangers are.
Dangers are what make the show, but they are plentiful. A recent episode saw the crew of the Aleutian Lady dealing with the impact of Typhoon Halong. Out on the water looking for a crab haul worth $2.1 million, the vessel was covered in water from gigantic waves. Hammering the engines, a fire broke out on board. There have even been scenes where tensions have erupted between the crew and fishermen on board.
Deadliest Catch has been on our screens for some time, but shows no signs of slowing down. This new location will bring new excitement, and it won’t be long before it arrives on screens. Keep checking listings to see when it will air on your favourite streaming service.
