Virgin Atlantic Holidays brings Korean supper club to Shoreditch with Korea Grandma as host
Virgin Atlantic Holidays will run a two-day Korean supper club in Shoreditch, east London, on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th July, hosted by Park Mak-rye, a Korean grandmother figure known online as Korea Grandma, who will serve traditional dishes and share family recipes and cultural stories.
The event, titled Heart + Seoul, will take place at 83 Rivington Street. Park Mak-rye is travelling to London on Virgin Atlantic’s direct service from Seoul to host the experience. A former restaurateur who ran her own establishment for around 40 years, she has become one of Korea’s most recognised online creators by sharing her home cooking and family traditions with audiences internationally.
The supper club will feature Korean dishes including banchan, home-cooked main courses and traditional desserts, alongside soju and local beers. Organisers have designed the venue as an open-plan communal dining space intended to reflect the atmosphere of Seoul’s local restaurants, markets and home kitchens. Throughout the sittings, Park Mak-rye will talk about the food, stories and traditions associated with Korean daily life.
The pop-up has been created to highlight the airline’s direct route between London and Seoul, and the range of holidays available through Virgin Atlantic. The company currently offers experience-based trips to Seoul via Virgin Atlantic, which it says is the only UK airline operating direct flights to the city. These include wearing a traditional hanbok, taking part in a tea ceremony, joining cookery classes and guided food market tours, as well as visits to the Demilitarized Zone and tours of Seoul’s Royal Palace. The operator also offers itineraries in Japan, Singapore and Thailand.
As part of the event, one guest at each sitting will win a pair of return flights to Seoul, with eight prizes available across the weekend. Winners will be required to book and travel within two weeks.
The pop-up will run with two lunch and two dinner sittings each day, at 12pm, 2pm, 6pm and 8pm. Bookings cost £30 per person, with limited space for walk-ins. All proceeds will go to Save the Children.
The event coincides with a period of heightened interest in Korean culture in London, following BTS performances at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a Peggy Gou set at the Old Royal Naval College, and the continued influence of K-beauty across the capital.
