Bon Bao brings handmade Chinese buns to Soho with launch giveaways

A new takeaway specialising in Chinese bao is opening on Tisbury Court in Soho, with Bon Bao officially launching next Friday. The new establishment will be serving hot handmade buns to grab and go in the bustling centre of Theatreland.

The food offering centres on two styles of bao, prepared on site each day, that are linked to the founders’ childhoods and to distinct traditions of Chinese cooking – one a home-cooking classic, the other a street food staple. The first is Zheng Bao, a soft, steamed bun with a juicy filling, and the second is Sheng Jian Bao, a pan-fried version with a soft top and a crisp base – comparatively uncommon in London despite its popularity in China, particularly Shanghai.

To mark the opening, the company will be distributing 1,000 prizes and discounts on the streets of Soho on Friday 18^th and Saturday 19^th September, as well as offering customers a free bao of their choice with any purchase from 20^th to 27^th September.

The new venue joins a strong range of Chinese and East Asian shops and eateries in and around the area, with Chinatown to the south. Though steamed bao buns have become an established part of the capital’s casual dining landscape over the past decade, filled and pleated varieties are less common, especially ones with crispy bottoms, which gives Bon Bao an intriguing edge over the competition.
