Bold Bean Co to launch first pop-up deli with jar-for-flowers swap in Soho

London-based food company, Bold Bean Co, will open a temporary deli and shop called The Beanery at 59 Greek Street in Soho from Tuesday 15th to Thursday 17th September. The pop-up, which will trade from 10am to 4pm each day, marks the first physical retail venture for the brand, which until now has reached customers through supermarket shelves and cookbooks. There will be also a giveaway of the first 500 lunches each day.

The site will have space for 12 diners, with takeaway pots also available. Snacks will be served throughout the day, while at lunchtime the kitchen will offer two dishes: Lemon Butter Beans with Pesto and Ricotta, or Tomato and Harissa Yoghurt Chickpeas with Capers and Dill. Both come with a slice of focaccia. Free lunches will be distributed from 12pm each day on a first-come, first-served basis.

Founder Amelia Christie-Miller said: “This is the first pop-up we’ve ever done, and it’s basically the whole world of Bold Bean brought to life for three days. We’ve spent years trying to get people bean obsessed through a jar on a shelf and our best selling cookbooks. Now we get to do it face to face. We’re giving away the first 500 lunches, completely free, every day, because there’s no faster way to make someone fall for beans than handing them a free incredible bean bowl and watching them dig in.”

A florist will work on site, hand-tying 100 mini bouquets of seasonal stems each day. Customers who bring an empty Bold Bean Co jar for recycling can exchange it for a bouquet; those without a jar can buy one for £5. The scheme is intended to encourage reuse of the company’s glass packaging.

Christie-Miller added: “We know that after polishing off our delicious beans, people re-use our glass jars for all sorts of things. Re-purposing them as a cute vase is just one way to give our jars a whole new lease of life!”

The shop will also stock the company’s range of jarred beans, including Rich Tomato Baked Beans, Queen Organic White Beans and a limited edition of British-grown Queen Carlin Peas, all cooked in water with salt. Two cookbooks and branded tote bags designed to hold the jars will be on sale, alongside previews of further merchandise available to pre-order.

Christie-Miller founded Bold Bean Co in May 2021, aged 27, after encountering jarred beans while studying in Madrid and finding them creamier than the tinned varieties sold in the UK. She had previously worked as a private chef and at the sustainability start-up Foodchain. The company sources and slow-cooks heirloom beans, and its products are stocked by Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, M&S, Booths and Ocado.
