Kricket to mark Diwali with candle-making workshop and family mela
Indian restaurant Kricket will celebrate Diwali on Saturday 7th November with two events in London: a candle-making workshop at their Shoreditch venue and a family-friendly mela in Canary Wharf.
The Shoreditch team have partnered with Hackney candle studio Ohros and non-alcoholic botanical drinks brand Botivo for a workshop themed around the festival of light. Georgia, the founder of Ohros, will lead the hands-on sessions, where guests will choose from a library of more than 30 scents to blend their own soy wax candle, which they then name and label using custom-designed stickers.
Two 90-minute sessions will run, from 11am to 12.30pm and from 1.30pm to 3pm, with tickets at £45 to include all materials, a Botivo drink and the finished candle to take home. Ohros explains the candles should have time to set, so they can be collected from 9am on Sunday 8th November or from two to three hours after the session. Those who choose to wait can stay for breakfast or lunch with 50% off their meal.
The workshop is open to all skill levels but is not suitable for young children because of safety concerns around the hot melted wax. It will take place in the restaurant’s private dining room, which is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible.
At Kricket Canary Wharf, there will be a Diwali mela from 12pm to 4pm, with art, music, games and food for all ages. A dhol drummer will greet guests on arrival, and henna, face painting and Karrom (a traditional South Asian board game), will run throughout the day. The centrepiece is a screen-printing station run by artist Natasha Kumar, whose work hangs in Kricket’s restaurants. She will be joined by artists Ben Allen and Adam Bridgland, and guests can customise their own Kumar print with glitter.
Tickets for the mela cost £30 for adults and £15 for children under 12, and under-2s go free. Each one includes bottomless biryani, chai and fresh lime soda, as well as access to all activities.
Diwali at Kricket promises to be a brilliant time. Bookings are open now.
