London events: must-visit events in the capital city
For anyone who finds the prospect of the next few months a little bleak, booking a ticket for an event in London is an excellent way to lift the winter blues.
The capital is staging a wide range of top-class events across numerous genres, making it an appealing destination for people in search of a good night (or afternoon) out.
Here are five events worth considering in London over the next few months, starting with a celebration of one of the best-loved indie albums of the past two decades.
Milburn at O2 Academy Islington: 15 October
Sheffield indie favourites Milburn have reunited to mark the 20th anniversary of their acclaimed debut album Well, Well, Well.
The band were originally part of a scene in Yorkshire that also produced Arctic Monkeys. Lead singer Alex Turner has said that Milburn inspired him to start a band.
Milburn’s upcoming gig at the O2 Academy Islington will give loyal fans a chance to celebrate a band that many believe deserved far wider success.
Joe Carnall Jnr, Louis Carnall, Tom Rowley and Joe Green have a strong reputation as a live act, and the show is likely to appeal to anyone with a fondness for indie music.
World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace: 11 December to 3 January
Sports fans will be in their element later this year as the prestigious World Darts Championship returns to Alexandra Palace, where the festive crowds create one of the loudest atmospheres in sport.
Previews of the tournament are already appearing across the web, from the national press to the best online crypto casino platform, ahead of an event that always generates a sizeable wave of excitement.
Luke Littler is widely tipped to win the title for the third consecutive year. However, his recent dip in form has given his rivals reason for optimism.
World Grand Prix champion Luke Humphries looks the strongest contender to topple Littler, while Gerwyn Price is another player capable of making a deep run.
Day Fever at Outernet Live: 5 December
Curated by Jon McClure of Reverend and the Makers, Day Fever at Outernet Live offers people the opportunity to enjoy a lively pre-Christmas get-together.
The afternoon event is aimed at people aged over 30 who still want to party, but who find the grind of staying out late at night a little too much.
Actress Vicky McClure and filmmaker Jonny Owen are the other inspirations behind an event which has grown into a nationwide phenomenon in the United Kingdom.
The organisers describe the event’s vibe as a “wedding party without the wedding”: casually celebratory, with no strict dress codes or pretence.
Cinderella at the London Palladium: 5 December to 10 January
The London Palladium’s long-running festive pantomime returns with a cast featuring several well-known names from showbusiness.
Comedy favourites Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders have been cast as the Ugly Sisters, alongside Julian Clary as the Fairy Godfather.
Paul Zerdin, Nigel Havers and Rob Madge are other standout names in a panto that promises plenty of laughs for audiences of all ages.
With dazzling sets, lavish costumes and plenty of cheekiness, Cinderella at the London Palladium is one of the most anticipated events taking place in London over the festive period.
Scott Bennett at The Comedy Store: 9 February
Having previously been described as “live comedy’s best kept secret“, Scott Bennett is now gaining the wider recognition many critics feel he has long deserved.
Bennett has previously supported Micky Flanagan, Rob Brydon, Jason Manford and John Bishop, and has impressed since embarking on his own headline tour.
Appearances on Live at the Apollo, The News Quiz, The Now Show and Mock the Week have showcased Bennett’s comedic talent to a national audience.
With his profile rising, Bennett may soon be playing much larger venues, so this smaller show is a rare chance to see him up close.
