New Zealand-born singer-songwriter Pip Brown, aka Ladyhawke, brought effortless cool to Kentish Town on Wednesday, playing a mixture of songs from her self-titled first album and the more recent Anxiety, released in May.

Beginning with her debut single Back of the Van, she managed to spread her time evenly between paying homage to her back catalogue (Paris is Burning, Dusk Till Dawn, Magic) and launching into newer material (Girl Like Me, The Quick & The Dead, Sunday Drive).

A spot on the set-list was also reserved for the Alice in Wonderland-inspired White Rabbit by influential psychedelic rock band Jefferson Airplane.

Highlights of the show included Anxiety’s lead single Black, White and Blue, with its rocky 1970s flavour and mind-blowing chorus, and the up-tempo and radio-friendly My Delirium: possibly her career’s peak.

Ladyhawke has become a cult icon and her brand of melodic indie-pop with electronic shades is refreshing and a must-see for an eclectic range of gig-goers.
