Carols in the City: Marie Curie Cancer Care Christmas concert at Southwark Cathedral

Carols in the City: Marie Curie Cancer Care Christmas concert at Southwark Cathedral | Live review

It’s during this time of year that many people turn to religion as the world celebrates the glorious birth of Jesus Christ. With many other expressions of celebration occurring, such as the igniting of wondrous lights, the adorning of decorative hangings and the giving of presents, it can often be forgotten that the singing of carols is also a traditional institution.

The Southwark Cathedral put on a show of various carols, literary recitals and speeches all hosted by Sophie Raworth on the 6th. The Marie Curie Cancer Care organisation also joined guests and planners for the evening to collect donations for their cause.

After a performance of Once in Royal David’s City by Fever Pitch, Sophie Raworth gave a brief overview of the evening’s proceedings. After this, Natascha McElhone presented the audience with a reading of Donal Og. In between renditions of Ding Dong Merrily on High, Silent Night and Hark the Herald Angels Sing, actress Olivia Hallinan read the amusing A Hint for Next Christmas, whilst Edwina Gudgeon and Dr Jane Collins explained the nature of Marie Curie Cancer, with how it has affected them personally. The heart-felt delivery was enough for many people to give very generous donations.

Classical singer Hayley Westenra topped off the night with her performance, and Sophie Raworth wrapped up the night by thanking everyone for coming.

The rapturous applause signified the success of the event and left an air of togetherness in the air as everyone left. It was an absolute pleasure to have experienced the concert.
