Sarmite Ostanevica: Causing a stir at London Fashion Week

Sarmite Ostanevica: Causing a stir at London Fashion Week

At London Fashion Week we saw amazing shows by the likes of Burberry and Christopher Kane. However, there was also some outstanding work from lesser-known designers. One of them was Sarmite Ostanevica. IMG_7868_2

Sarmite presented her work in the form of a contemporary catwalk in the streets of London on 17th February. The unique fashion collection, called Sculpture Wedding AW13, was presented to the general public, which had never been done before. Models circulated the West End area through Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, Somerset House, Covent Garden, Regent Street, Oxford Street and Selfridges. The whole event was finely choreographed, and received considerable acclaim and positive feedback. IMG_7936_2

The collection draws inspiration from the classical forms of various sculptures, fabric movement and the elegant silhouette of a bride. Sarmite uses her love of tailoring and fascination with surrealism to merge the classical form with contemporary style. Her signature pieces are clean and sharp with a surreal edge, complemented by fine detail. The collection is absolutely stunning. Sarmite has kept the colour palette to quite neutral colours but it works really well. The collection is also quite wearable – these are pieces that could be worn to the office or on a night out, and you wouldn’t look too outlandish. IMG_7931_2

Sarmite is a London-based designer who focuses on merging fashion with art forms. She studied at Kensington and Chelsea College as well as attending courses in Central St Martin’s. Through various experiences she debuted with her first fashion show in Riga, Latvia, in 2010. Her work has received awards and has been featured in Vogue, Flanelle, Turn and Papercut, as well as many others. IMG_7940_2

Sarmite may have been overlooked this season, but after seeing her latest collection that can’t happen for the forthcoming seasons. Her work is outstanding and the detail on her clothing is gorgeous.
