UFO at the Forum

UFO at the Forum | Live review

UFO are an English heavy metal/hard rock band formed in 1969, at a time when both genres were blossoming and flourishing at full throttle. The group had considerable success, especially at the beginning of their career but, like many others, it has also gone through several hiatuses and line-up changes which have occasionally overshadowed its fame.

The turnover of members, however, affected UFO both negatively and positively; in fact the participation of a few incongruous contributors led in time to the production of some albums which went on to become veritable milestones.

It was no surprise then that the band was warmly welcomed at the Forum when they arrived on stage. Not even the initial technical difficulties discouraged the audience, who enjoyed the gig with enthusiasm and decorum (flying in the face of the popular belief that this sort of concert is attended by wild, indomitable crowds). Both nostalgic and newly acquired fans were in attendance.

Singer Phil Mogg seemed at times to struggle vocally, with the bass threatening to swallow his voice, but he demonstrated enduring ability and energy. With virtuoso guitar solos and routine but impressive tricks like playing instruments behind their backs, all the musicians gave terrific performances.

UFO entertained their fans mostly playing old hits like Let It Roll or Love to Love, but also aired tunes from their most recent album Seven Deadly, which mixes heavier riffs with more melodic pieces.

The group saved the best for last with Rock Bottom, the last song before the encore, which featured Doctor Doctor and Shout Shout – both iconic records from their heyday. UFO have most certainly still got it!
