An interview with BasharatyanV: where opposites meet

An interview with BasharatyanV: where opposites meet

Born and raised in Moscow, Veronica has travelled a lot as a child and she takes inspiration from all her experiences to create peculiar collections that reflect the spirit of the countries she’s inspired by. Veronica opened a showroom in Moscow and is working to open a new one in London. Her latest works caught the attention of the press.

When did you launch your brand?

BasharatyanV was established in August 2011 in London.

How do all your experiences (studying in London and in Milan, working at Ralph Lauren and at Natasha Drigant) and your origins merge into your work?

Each of my collections are dedicated to a certain country, style and tradition – that is due to travelling a lot with my parents when I was a kid. All the experience gained while studying and working obviously helped a lot as well, as I have started my own label from scratch and I only had little work experience, years of education and my passion for fashion and art.

What would you say is your main source of inspiration?

Countries, traditions, cultures: everything that surrounds us every day.

What’s the concept behind the Siberia SS13 collection?

Siberia is dedicated to a part of Russia, which is actually South Siberia, a place called Chara Sands – where desert sits next to icy mountain tops – an amazing combination of summer and winter. That is why the SS13 collection has a wintery name. We transformed all traditionally winter clothes into summer clothes, using layers of light silk chiffon to create a sort of “fur” effect. That is why there are so many cropped chiffon fur tops, vests and a chiffon fur long coat.

What kind of woman wears BasharatyanV?

A very confident woman who has her own style and values quality – she is not afraid to mix everyday classics like a chiffon silk maxi skirt with a cropped ribbon-knit organza top.

Is there any particular designer you would collaborate with?

I truly appreciate the work of each and every designer, and maybe in the future I might consider collaborating with a jewellery designer.

What’s your fashion vice?

I love bags and I, personally, buy way too many bags – all shapes, sizes, modern and vintage!

What’s the highlight of your career so far?

Recently, Jessie J wore my ribbon-knit SS13 dress on The Voice UK and I have been receiving an overwhelming influx of amazing press and buyers’ enquiries. She looked stunning and I’m so happy with the reception.

Where do you see your label in five years?

We are planning to be presented in more multi-brand boutiques and department stores around Europe, and hopefully have a few mono-brand shops in London by the end of 2018.
