Raymond Briggs’ Father Christmas at the Lyric Hammersmith

Raymond Briggs’ Father Christmas at the Lyric Hammersmith | Theatre review

Raymond Briggs’ Father Christmas returns to the Lyric Hammersmith for its fourth year to deliver another classic must-see production this Christmas. It is a perfect show for families with young children looking for a dynamic introduction to theatre.

From the same author as The Snowman, Father Christmas follows the story of Santa as he awakes from a sunny holiday dream to find that it is Christmas Eve, his busiest day of the year. As he embarks on his wintry way, the timeless story comes to life with live music, playful puppets and a magical set.

Theatre company Pins and Needles takes on the ambitious task of staging Santa’s North Pole home. The set is skilfully constructed to convey Father Christmas’ daily routine, with the creative accompaniment of live music and sound effects. Young members of the audience giggled as Santa relieved himself during his morning bathroom routine and fed his beloved reindeer. The use of playful puppets personifying his pet cat and dog add an interactive and lively element. Santa’s delivery of presents in his sleigh is nothing short of magical. The stage is blanketed in smoke as Santa’s sleigh emerges with reindeer at the helm, mesmerising the audience and bringing Christmas joy as he shuffles down the chimney.

The production is a witty and visual rendition of a timeless classic. Pins and Needles have created an imaginative and playful experience for children to engage with well-made theatre and celebrate the festive season. The Lyric Hammersmith studio provides an intimate space to host enchanting Christmas magic.
