Chelsea gastropub launches free Sunday roast for furry friends to mark International Dog Day

The Chalk Freehouse, the Chelsea gastropub from the Tom Kerridge Group, will begin serving a complimentary Sunday roast for dogs from this Sunday, marking International Dog Day on Wednesday. Called The Dog’s Dinner, the dish has been developed with the fresh dog food company Butternut Box and will be available for a limited period throughout autumn to dogs accompanying guests who order from the Sunday menu. The pub, which opened in June 2025 in a restored Victorian building just off the King’s Road, already welcomes dogs on the premises. Now, canine visitors can enjoy a version of the Sunday lunch their owners are eating – for free.

The Dog’s Dinner, served in a small or large portion, has been created jointly by the pub’s head chef, Tom De Keyser, and the team at Butternut, with the aim of ensuring it is safe and nutritionally appropriate. It is built around the dog food company’s Pork This Way recipe, which contains 60% human-quality pork alongside carrots, butternut squash, split red lentils and green vegetables. The kitchen adds pup-friendly trimmings including crushed carrot, roast potatoes and a Yorkshire pudding. On the menu it appears first as a series of woofs and barks, followed by a translation reading Roast Dinner with All the Trimmings.

The Sunday menu for humans currently includes 30-day Dry-Aged Ribeye of Beef, Half Devonshire White Chicken, Loin Chop of Blythburgh Pork or Ragu of Summer Vegetables with Braised Portobello Mushroom, each served with roast potatoes, crushed carrot and a stuffed Yorkshire pudding.

De Keyser has worked with Tom Kerridge for more than a decade, having previously run the kitchens at the two-Michelin-starred The Hand & Flowers and the Michelin-starred The Coach, both in Marlow. The chef said: “Sunday lunch is about bringing everyone together, and for many of our guests, that includes their dog. They have always been welcomed at The Chalk Freehouse, so it felt right to give them a roast of their own. We wanted The Dog’s Dinner to have all the fun and theatre of a proper Chalk Freehouse Sunday roast, right down to the roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. We are looking forward to seeing what London’s four-legged diners make of it – I suspect this reviewer will be seeing most plates licked clean!”
