Marvellous Imaginary Menagerie at Greenwich Theatre | Theatre review

Stuck on how to entertain the kids during their Easter holidays? Then head to one of the theatres on Les Enfants Terribles’ tour to catch their indoor production of Marvellous Imaginary Menagerie. This is a show that will keep the little ones chuckling from start to finish, and will most probably have the same effect on parents, too.

What started as a touring festival show, Marvellous Imaginary Menagerie has a real travelling circus feel, complete with whacky costumes and clown-like make-up. The audience meet Dr Longitude and his gang of ridiculous friends, who present the weird and wonderful creatures in their menagerie and tell the tales of their bizarre existences and how they found them. With a nod to the creations of Roald Dahl, the animals come to life through detailed storytelling and glimpses of hilarious life-size puppets.

The set is an elaborate playground for the actors and their puppets, with different levels and areas as well as a wide array of props. The characters certainly aren’t shy in breaking the fourth wall, climbing through the audience and inviting people onstage, to give the show a delightfully interactive touch. With elaborate tales that will keep older kids hooked alongside songs and dances for the younger ones and jokes that will tickle mums and dads, this is a show that really targets every generation.

Marvellous Imaginary Menagerie is a visual spectacle filled with all the energy, fun and absurd silliness that one would expect from a great kid’s show. Whether the viewer is new to the work of Les Enfants Terribles or one of their band of loyal followers, this is definitely one to watch before the tour comes to an end in April.
