Heathers the Musical enters its final weeks at new venue The Arts at Marble Arch – must end Saturday 22 August
Grab your scrunchies while you still can: Heathers the Musical is in London and the clock is ticking. Andy Fickman’s production has taken up residence at The Arts at Marble Arch – the capital’s brand-new theatre, which opened its doors this summer with the cult favourite as its very first show – for a strictly limited run of 52 performances that must end on 22nd August.
Based on the late-80s film starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater – a story known not only by film buffs but also to the general public – the musical follows Veronica Sawyer, just another nobody at Westerberg High until she is taken under the wings of the beautiful and impossibly cruel Heathers. Her climb up the social ladder takes a dark turn with the arrival of JD, a mysterious teen rebel who teaches her that it might kill to be a nobody, but it’s murder being a somebody.
WhatsOnStage Award nominee Gerardine Sacdalan leads the cast as Veronica, opposite Louis Hearsey as JD; Liberty Stottor, Jessica Ibadin and Lou Henry complete the clique, with much of the young company making their professional debuts. Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe’s score swings between bubblegum pop and rock ballads, and numbers like Seventeen, Dead Girl Walking and the uproarious My Dead Gay Son have by now earned their place in musical theatre folklore.
Since debuting in the capital in 2018, the show has bounced in and out of the West End, crossed over to New York and Melbourne and completed three record-breaking UK and Ireland tours, picking up a devoted following along the way. However, this stint is a short one: fewer than two weeks remain before the Heathers leave town.
