The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2018: Osteria Francescana is number one again – full list and map

Tonight in Bilbao, Osteria Francescana has been crowned the world’s best restaurant for the second time. The international event celebrating global gastronomy has come back to Europe after a stop in New York (2016) and Melbourne (2018), taking place at Palacio Euskalduna.

Watch our interviews with all the top chefs from the ceremony here.

The top ten hasn’t changed much in terms of restaurants: the ranking isn’t the same but nine out of ten names haven’t changed – apart from Alain Passard’s L’Arpège that reached number eight. And it isn’t so surprising considering nothing really big has come out of the global food industry. The biggest exception is Disfrutar of Barcelona – a truly incredible restaurant – that broke the list at number 18, becoming the highest entry.

It wasn’t the most positive year for the UK; although Clare Smyth deservedly won the Best Female Chef 2018 Award, all the entries from the 2017 list saw a worsening of their position: The Clove Club is at number 33, The Ledbury at number 42, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal at number 45. There is, however, a new entry: James Lowe’s Lyle’s ranks at 38. London confirmed itself as a global food hub – the city with the most restaurants in the top 100 after New York – while being the only British city represented.
