Party Down season three

Party Down season three | Show review

This highly anticipated third season of cult workplace comedy Party Down brings the esteemed catering company back together for a fun-fuelled and chaotic ten-year reunion with a team that provides waitering services for parties hosted by the kooky LA crowd. It’s been 13 years since the first series was released in 2009 and show runner John Enbom collaborates once again with writers Rob Thomas, Dan Etheridge and Paul Rudd to bring this hilarious story back onto the small screen.

Crisp, white shirts and kitsch, pink bow-ties at the ready, the team are once again headed up by their hapless manager, Ron Donald (Ken Marino). There’s a welcome return for Adam Scott as Henry, along with Martin Starr as Roman and Ryan Hansen reprising his role as Kyle. With some of the staff having moved on with their dreams of making it big, there’s also space for a couple of newcomers. Zoe Chao comes onboard as their creative and quirky food expert, and Tyrel Jackson Williams joins them between jobs as a lively online influencer and blogger. As the team darts around LA at various parties they’re required to cater for, a slew of ridiculous situations follow. There’s the day the caterers all polish off some hallucinogenic mushrooms, the fake end-of-year prom that culminates in staff performing a dance-off, and a cringeworthy karaoke house party that also brings Jennifer Garner and James Marsden into the mix.

Cleverly written so that each episode stands on its own, there’s no real need to head back to the past two seasons to play storyline catch-up. Scott is always placed at the very centre of all the drama, his dry, deadpan humour a brilliant springboard for all the mayhem to bounce off. It’s a sitcom that’s easy to relate to, with firm nods to shows like The Office, Superstore and Parks and Recreation (also starring Scott). Viewers can expect a brilliant balance of comedy, chaos and charming moments of friendship and romance.
