“It’s hopefully introducing Star Trek to a whole new generation”: Rebecca Romijn and Anson Mount on Star Trek – Strange New Worlds season two

As the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds gets underway, audiences will see new storylines from the Milky Way galaxy unfold over ten episodes as Captain Pike and his crew on the USS Enterprise undertake new missions to ensure their survival and navigate new worlds. With a narrative set in the 23rd century and serving as a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series, the showrunners have kept to the storytelling approach of the first season, giving each episode a standalone feel that also allows new fans to come on board.

When Una Chin Riley’s (Rebecca Romijn) past as an Illyrian is unveiled, her fate is left in the hands of the court, where decisions about her future with Starfleet hang in the balance. This brings her friendship with Captain Pike (Anson Mount) into question as he stands firmly by his lieutenant commander in her case against race policies set in place by the United Federation of Planets. The series also brings a new engineer on board called Pelia, played by screen and stage legend Carol Kane, and Pike chooses to take some leave of absence leaving Captain Spock (Ethan Peck) in charge of the ship. There are also some brilliant time travelling sequences that bring about both danger and wonder, as well as a crossover moment with some of the cast of the animated series, Lower Deck.

The Upcoming had the pleasure of speaking to Romijn and Mount about their roles this season, takeaways from the courtroom drama, passing on the responsibility of being captain and working with guest stars.
