Kylie Minogue – Tension
In the wake of the global success that was opening track and summer hit Padam Padam, Kylie Minogue’s latest album is here. Tension offers a fun, sexy, sensual and at times nostalgic listening experience, blending elements of pop, R&B, 80s disco and house. It serves as the perfect soundtrack for the moments of anticipation of a night out, and the dancefloor frenzy that follows. An unfussy record with heart as well as a physical quality: it demands movement and is best experienced through the body.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the catchy Padam Padam stands as one of the highlights. Its infectious beat would compel even the most reserved listener to get up and dance – or at least nod along. The title refers to the sound of one’s heartbeat – a heartbeat likely to become louder and louder while the glittery anthem is playing. Merging contemporary pop with a retro groove, it proves how Kylie can craft something fresh and original while remaining true to her signature sound. It is pure, delectable fun.
The following track, Hold On to Now, while being on the same upbeat and euphoric wavelength, tells a bittersweet and universal story: being aware of the often fleeting nature of sex and togetherness, while also trying to live in those stolen moments of romance, and having fun despite not knowing where a relationship is going.
Sensuality is also a predominant flavour, manifesting itself in various forms throughout the tracks, particularly in the raunchy Tension (“Oh my god/Touch me right there!”), and the mesmerising Hands (“Whenever I feel your hands all over me/It’s like I’m up in heaven/I’m in a dream”).
The Australian singer’s 16th studio album fulfils its promises, offering a delectably unpretentious yet euphoric experience that shakes the listener awake. While not every single song is perhaps entirely memorable, Kylie’s dedication to her craft shines through. Tension is a shimmery testament to Kylie Minogue’s enduring influence on the music industry (and the dancefloor), retaining the essence of what makes her an icon in the world of pop.
