The Eternal Daughter: On the red carpet with Tilda Swinton and Joanna Hogg

The Eternal Daughter is a semi-autobiographical gothic-mystery drama from filmmaker Joanna Hogg. It stars Tilda Swinton in a unique dual role as writer Julie and her elderly mother Rosalind. With Hogg and Swinton having previously worked on The Souvenir film series together, there are some strong character connections, with this new feature underpinned by a similar focus on family relationships.

The narrative follows the mother and daughter dynamic as they book a short retreat in a remote countryside hotel following the death of the father. The place reveals itself to be a previous childhood home of Rosalind’s, and as ghosts of her past simmer to the surface, the story finds a way to talk about grief, mortality and the changing forms of our memories.

The Upcoming had the pleasure of speaking to Hogg and Swinton on the red carpet at the BFI Southbank about their friendship and ongoing working relationship, what the idea of an improvised script brought to the film and how the story evolved through the process of making it.

We chatted to Carly-Sophia Davies about what drew her to the role as the hotel receptionist, how she took to the filming process and what it was like to work alongside both Hogg and Swinton using collaborative improvisation techniques to build the story.

Joseph Mydell spoke to us about his audition for the role of Bill he plays in this film, how he embodies his character and the haunting location that they filmed in. He also talked about the skills he learned from drama school and bringing them into the mix for this feature.
