“It’s a very real set of circumstances for some people”: Rafe Spall and Esther Smith on Trying season four

As season four of the popular comedy-drama series Trying returns, viewers are moved on six years from where it last left off and adoptive parents Jason (Rafe Spall) and Nikki (Esther Smith) are settled into their family life with their teenage daughter Princess (Scarlett Raynor) and son Tyler (Cooper Turner). The household are happily adjusted within their wider community of friends, close family and school life, but after facing a funeral of an extended family member, emotions start to ripple under the surface and rock the equilibrium they’ve created.

After the raucous wake held in the local pub, Princess starts to seek out answers about her own birth mother Kat and puts Nikki’s sister Karen (Sian Brooke) in a tricky position with a secret jaunt to the south coast. Nikki’s feelings are tested as she starts to question her role as a mother and the continuing struggles of the adoptive journey and the emotional rollercoaster that accompanies that, especially as the children grow older.

The Upcoming had the pleasure of speaking to Spall and Smith about coming back to the series this time round, the realistic portrayal of being adoptive parents to two children and the emotional new layers of the script written by Andy Wolten for this season.

Trying season four is released on Apple TV+ on 22nd May 2024.
