Gemma Arterton returns in Funny Woman series two, tackling personal and professional hurdles on Sky

Gemma Arterton will appear on television screens once again with the second series of the Sky original comedy-drama, Funny Woman, scheduled to premiere on 6th September 2024. The series, set in the 1960s, continues to follow the life of Sophie Straw, a beloved comic actress portrayed by Arterton, as she navigates the complexities of her career and personal life.

The upcoming series examines Sophie’s challenges as she deals with a stalled divorce, a failing new sitcom and a shocking family revelation. Despite these setbacks, Sophie finds success in a film role across from a glamorous French movie star, leading to an opportunity in Hollywood. However, choosing to stay true to her roots, she returns to London with the aim of reuniting her team to produce a show that mirrors her real-life experiences and confronts outdated societal norms.

The show’s ensemble cast sees the return of familiar faces including David Threlfall, Rosie Cavaliero and Alexa Davies, alongside newcomers such as Steve Zissis, Marcus Rutherford and Gemma Whelan. The series explores themes of love, gender equality and LGBTQ rights, reflecting the dynamic cultural shifts of the 1960s.

Funny Woman offers a blend of humour and drama, portraying the trials and triumphs of its protagonist against the vibrant backdrop of a decade known for its significant cultural transformations.
