Royal Opera House celebrates Maria Callas with exclusive tour and exhibit coinciding with Angelina Jolie’s biopic release

On 18th and 19th January 2025, the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden will host a unique tour celebrating the legendary opera singer Maria Callas, coinciding with the UK cinema release of the biopic Maria starring Angelina Jolie on 10th January. The tour offers a rare glimpse into Callas’s life and her illustrious career on the Covent Garden stage, including a close-up view of two costumes worn by Jolie in the film, designed by Massimo Cantini Parrini.

Directed by Pablo Larraín, known for his works Spencer and Jackie, the film Maria explores the life of Maria Callas, portrayed during her final days in 1970s Paris. Callas, often hailed as the greatest female opera singer, had a profound connection with the Royal Opera House, marking her debut in Norma in 1952 and giving her final opera performance in Tosca in 1965. Her performances at the venue are still celebrated as some of the most memorable in the history of opera.

The tour is designed to provide an unprecedented insight into both Callas’s professional and personal life. It includes behind-the-scenes access that sheds light on her experiences and performances at the Royal Opera House, which she once described as a love affair.

Tickets for this special edition tour are currently available for purchase on the Royal Opera House website. The event offers opera enthusiasts and fans of Callas an intimate experience of the singer’s legacy and her impact on the world of opera.

This event not only highlights the historical significance of Maria Callas to the Royal Opera House but also connects her storied past with contemporary cinema, offering a unique cultural experience that celebrates both historical and modern artistic achievements.
