Portuguese restaurant Bar Douro has reintroduced its street food pop-up, Roulote, at Hackney Bridge from Thursday, 3rd April. The pop-up, which first appeared during the 2021 lockdown, draws inspiration from the traditional food trailers found in Lisbon and Porto, celebrating Portugal’s diverse street food culture.

Located in East London’s Hackney Bridge, an area already known for its independent food vendors, landscaped gardens, and vibrant bar scene, Roulote offers a scenic dining option along the canal, just a short walk from Hackney Wick station. The pop-up will operate until 5th May, opening from Tuesday to Sunday each week.

Roulote by Bar Douro features a variety of Portuguese sandwiches including the iconic Bifana, priced at £9.5. This sandwich consists of thinly sliced pork shoulder poached in white wine and fermented pepper sauce, tucked into carcaças bread with savora mustard mayo. Other offerings include a Piri-piri chicken & pepper sandwich and an Octopus & pepper sandwich, each costing £9.5 and £12 respectively.

The menu includes as well traditional Portuguese snacks, or petiscos, such as Croquetes de Alheira—crispy croquettes made with smoked sausage—and Milho Frito, a golden-fried polenta served with a fermented red pepper sauce. These can be enjoyed alongside Super Bock beer, one of Portugal’s most popular beverages, available in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions.

The founder of Bar Douro, Max Graham, shared his personal connection to the concept, as he said: “Growing up in Porto, some of my best food memories are of standing at street-side roulotes, eating saucy bifanas late into the night. This pop-up is a celebration of that energy, big flavours, no fuss, just proper Portuguese food that’s made to be shared.”

Roulote seeks to replicate the authentic experience of Portugal’s lively street food scene, providing Londoners and visitors a taste of Portuguese culinary tradition in a casual, convivial setting.
