Wahaca marks Day of the Dead with supper club, tequila tastings and new seasonal menu

Wahaca, the Mexican-inspired restaurant group co-founded by MasterChef winner Thomasina Miers, is marking the Day of the Dead with a series of seasonal events and new dishes across its UK locations this October and November. The celebrations are taking place at branches in London, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Brighton, featuring themed décor, a one-off supper club, a new tequila tasting experience and a refreshed winter menu.

The Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is a traditional Mexican holiday that honours deceased loved ones. Wahaca is commemorating the occasion by transforming its restaurants with decorations and altars inspired by ofrendas – colourful shrines commonly displayed in Mexican homes. A limited-edition Blood Orange & Hibiscus Margarita (£9.95) will be available during the celebrations, made with blanco tequila, fresh lime and aquafaba.

On 30th October, the Shoreditch branch will host a special Day of the Dead Supper Club. The candlelit event, led by Miers in collaboration with online food marketplace Delli, will feature a selection of revived dishes from the restaurant’s past offerings. The evening will also have a live DJ and face painting, with tickets priced at £65 to include a welcome cocktail and a goodie bag. In addition to the supper club, Wahaca is introducing a Tequila Experience (£14.95), offering guests a curated tasting flight of three versions – blanco, reposado and añejo – each accompanied by flavour pairings and tasting notes.

Alongside the festivities, the group has launched its new winter menu, which features several seasonal dishes. Highlights include the Butter Bean & Confit Garlic Dip, made with slow-poached garlic and topped with jalapeño oil, and Roast Ancho Mushroom Tacos, served with jalapeño mayo and salsa macha. There is a range of other new additions such as Corn, Bean & Feta Tostadas, Sautéed Guajillo Prawns, and Roast Butternut Squash served with cashew mole. For dessert, the Chocolate Mole Cake blends spices and chocolate, while the Frozen Flight offers three tequila-infused frozen treats.

Speaking about the festivities, Miers said: “I’ve always been fascinated by the colour and energy of Mexican culture – it’s so full of life, brimming with creativity, steeped in the community. Day of the Dead is a particularly magical celebration, reaching out to lost loved ones and revelling in memories with them. We love to capture some of that spirit each year at Wahaca, bringing people together over delicious food, great tequila and wonderful music to brighten up the autumn months.”
