The Real Greek launches liquid gold olive oil shot ritual to promote Mediterranean wellness for the new year

The Real Greek will be offering diners a complimentary shot of Greek extra virgin olive oil, Liquid Gold, on arrival at all its sites until the 31st January. The initiative, which takes place nationwide, is intended to encourage a Mediterranean approach to wellness at the start of the year, as an alternative to the widespread Dry January trend.
The ritual is rooted in centuries-old Greek tradition, where olive oil is celebrated as a symbol of vitality, health, and heritage. Upon arrival, diners will be invited to participate in the ceremonial shot, accompanied by a small card stating: “You’ve just taken Liquid Gold – a 3,000-year-old wellness ritual powered by good fats.” Guests will also receive a 20% discount on their next visit as part of the promotion.
The restaurant group’s menu is based on the Mediterranean diet – featuring dishes such as olives, hummus, tzatziki, prawn souvlaki, octopus, aubergine, and Greek salads – which is widely recognised for its health benefits, particularly its focus on fresh vegetables, legumes, fish, and the prominent use of olive oil. These dietary habits have been linked to improved gut health, cardiovascular function, and longevity.
Gastrointestinal physiologist Jordan Haworth commented on the health claims associated with the ritual: “Extra virgin olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fats and polyphenols that support a healthy gut microbiome. Combined with the Mediterranean diet – packed with vegetables, legumes, meat, and fish – it’s one of the best ways to nourish your body and promote long-term wellbeing. Taking a ceremonial shot like this is not only rooted in ancient Greek tradition, it’s also one of the biggest wellness trends we expect to see in 2026. The Real Greek’s menu shows how delicious, everyday eating can align with science-backed health benefits.”
