Japanese restaurant group Taro will open its tenth UK location in Crystal Palace this week. The new branch, on Church Road, will bring the chain’s signature dishes to the area, marking a significant milestone in their ongoing expansion across London and the South East.

Founded by the mysteriously named Mr Taro in 1999, the restaurant group has gained a reputation for offering Japanese cuisine in a casual, everyday setting, inspired by the concept of Taishu Shokudo – an everyday dining room in Japan. This south London opening follows recent launches in Brentwood (May 2024), Catford (June 2024), and Brighton (September 2025), and is the latest addition to a portfolio that includes locations in Soho, Balham, Kennington, Finchley Central, Pimlico, Walthamstow and others.

The new location will accommodate 66 diners and will feature Taro’s established menu of freshly prepared dishes, including ramen, udon noodles, sushi, sashimi and tempura. Also on offer are gyoza (prawn or grilled chicken), takoyaki (octopus balls with tonkatsu sauce) and the brand’s popular bento boxes, which include a selection of Japanese classics such as sushi, tempura, katsu, edamame, miso soup and rice.

A special dish exclusive to the Crystal Palace branch will be the Crystal Palace Special Roll – a rainbow sushi roll filled with salmon, prawn, yellowtail, asparagus, avocado and tobiko, finished with spicy mayo. The drinks menu will include hot and cold sake, Japanese beers, soft drinks and a signature lychee martini (made with holy grass vodka, lychee juice, coconut syrup and lime).

Mr Taro, founder of the group, said: “We are incredibly proud to be opening Taro Crystal Palace, marking our tenth restaurant in the UK. Crystal Palace has a strong sense of community, a great independent food scene and a real neighbourhood spirit, which made it feel like the perfect home for this important milestone for Taro.”

He added, “Japanese food is truly having a moment in the UK, and I am deeply proud to be sharing the flavours of my home country with British diners. We look forward to welcoming the people of Crystal Palace into our restaurant, being part of the local community and sharing what we love most: great food made with care.”

Taro Crystal Palace will be open Monday to Saturday from 12pm to 10pm, and on Sundays from noon to 9.30pm. Delivery will be available via Deliveroo and Uber Eats.
