La Maritxu to open fourth Basque cheesecake shop at Coal Drops Yard this May

La Maritxu, the Basque cheesecake brand founded in London in 2021, is opening its fourth site at Coal Drops Yard in King’s Cross this May, continuing the expansion of a business that has grown steadily since spouse founders Lucia and Ignacio launched it three years ago. The new location will serve the brand’s signature cheesecake alongside a rotating selection of limited-edition flavours, bringing the offering to one of central London’s busiest retail and dining destinations.

The branch will have seating for 14, split between indoor and outdoor spaces, which makes it the brand’s smallest to date. Customers will be able to purchase cheesecake by the slice or as whole cakes in four sizes – mini, medium, 8-inch, and 10-inch – with a drinks menu running alongside that offers coffee, tea, chai, matcha and soft drinks. Coal Drops Yard, which reopened in its current form in 2018 following a redevelopment of the Victorian storage buildings behind King’s Cross station, draws a mix of local visitors and tourists and is home to a range of independent food, drink and retail businesses. For La Maritxu, the site represents a move into one of the capital’s more prominent leisure destinations.

Their cheesecakes are made in the traditional Basque style associated with Bilbao, baked at a high temperature to produce the characteristic dark, caramelised exterior and dense, creamy interior that distinguishes them from more conventional versions. Since opening their first site, the brand have developed a following in London through locations in Kingly Court in Carnaby, Connaught Village in Mayfair and Greenwich.

The upcoming opening adds to a period of consistent growth. Having launched during a competitive period for the London food scene, La Maritxu has expanded to four sites in under four years, establishing itself within a niche that has seen growing consumer interest in regional European baking traditions.
