Camden Fringe celebrates 20 years with more than 400 shows across North London
Camden Fringe will mark its 20th anniversary this summer with a programme of more than 400 theatre, comedy, dance, music and cabaret performances staged across over 30 venues throughout Camden and North London.
Founded in 2006 as an accessible alternative to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the festival has grown into one of London’s most significant platforms for emerging and established artists alike, while maintaining its commitment to affordability and creative freedom.
This year’s programme spans everything from personal storytelling and reimagined classics to audience-interactive experiences. Highlights include BAFTA winner Kimberley Nixon’s solo show Baby Brain (10th to 12th August, Bridewell Theatre), which explores motherhood and postpartum psychosis through a “slightly true story”, and 3 Phone Calls (23rd and 27th August, Lion & Unicorn Theatre), based on real conversations between a queer child and their mother and performed by a real-life mother and son.
Classic works receive fresh interpretations throughout the festival, from a 1960s-set version of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville (7ᵗʰ to 9ᵗʰ August, Upstairs at the Gatehouse) to Abigail (8ᵗʰ to 9ᵗʰ August, Etcetera Theatre), which revisits The Crucible through the perspective of survivors of sexual violence. Shakespeare also gets a musical makeover in Pericles (kind of) (24th to 27th August, Old Red Lion), part of the venue’s annual SHAKEFEST programme.
Audience participation is another recurring theme, with interactive western The Well (27th to 29th August, The Courtyard Theatre), philosophical reality-show parody I’m a Philosopher! Why the Fuck am I Here? (13th to 15th August, The Cockpit), and comedy gameshow Cornershop Showdown (10th to 14th August, Camden Comedy Club), in which one audience member could win a two-hour holiday for four in North Luton.
Comedy fans can also look forward to Sofar Comedy (28th August, The London Art Bar), a special Camden Fringe takeover from the team behind Sofar Sounds, featuring a handpicked line-up of emerging stand-up, improv and musical comedy performers.
Reflecting on the festival’s milestone year, founders Zena Barrie and Michelle Flower said: “It is quite incredible to be celebrating the 20th year of the Camden Fringe. Unlike our faces, the festival has got smoother, tighter and more splendid with every passing year. We have a fantastic line-up in 2026 to mark this milestone. Bring it on!”
