Snow Patrol at Crystal Palace Park
Northern Irish rockers Snow Patrol bring The Forest Is the Path tour to Crystal Palace Park for their first open-air London show for quite some time on 3rd July. Marking the 20th anniversary of their best-selling album Eyes Open, the performance proved that even after three decades, their songs still bring people together.
The warm evening sun enhanced the crowd’s relaxed energy before Snow Patrol made their appearance. Chatter rose in anticipation as smoke smothered the stage for Snow Patrol’s opening song Take Back the City. Lightbody asked, “Crystal Palace, can you hear me?” and the crowd was invested from the first note.
Every lyric was sung with emotion; Lightbody’s facial expressions told a story of their own. During fan-favourite Shut Your Eyes, Lightbody instructed the audience to sing the chorus back to him, starting quietly and building into a roar, which strengthened the powerful bond between artist and fan. The spontaneity of this performance left fans with a deeply intimate experience, felt through his conversational breaks and self-deprecating humour about forgetting lyrics.
Throughout, the pace fluctuated from mellow to electric. Old songs, with striking guitar riffs, were tinged with nostalgia, while newer songs allowed the piano to shine through, reflecting the emotional resonance of their deeply personal lyrics. The crowd remained attentive during their newer tracks, but energy peaked when hits like Run and Open Your Eyes blasted from the speakers, and the audience grew louder. Radiant hues of red, blue, yellow and green tinted the screens, mirroring the array of emotions their songs bring to life.
After performing their unreleased song Love, I Guess, Kylie Minogue appeared as a special guest for a live debut of their upcoming single, These Alarms. Dedicating the classic Chasing Cars to Minogue and performing it together, the crowd became a sea of raised hands, with fans embracing and singing in unison. Chants of “one more song” after Snow Patrol’s swift exit led to an encore that summarised the entire show: a quiet ballad followed by one final burst of euphoria. Lost for words, Lightbody thanked the audience for an “unreal” evening, calling it “one of my favourite nights ever”. This final farewell to fans who stayed to soak in the moment even longer demonstrated that Snow Patrol’s longevity isn’t simply their catalogue of songs, but their ability to make thousands of people feel like they’re sharing the same moment.
