La Bola Negra, the acclaimed Spanish drama starring Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close, has won the Audience Award at the BFI London Film Festival, just days before its UK cinema release.
Directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, better known as Los Javis, the sweeping queer romance follows three men whose lives are connected across three different eras – 1932, 1937 and 2017. Inspired by the unfinished final work of Spanish poet Federico García Lorca, the film explores love, desire and the stories of those forced to hide their identities.
The star-studded cast also includes Élite actor Miguel Bernardeau, Lola Dueñas and Spanish musician Guitarricadelafuente, making his big-screen debut.
The latest win adds to an impressive awards run, with La Bola Negra already picking up prizes at Cannes, Toronto and San Sebastián. The film has also been nominated for Best International Independent Film at the British Independent Film Awards and selected as Spain’s entry for the 2027 Oscars.
Following sold-out screenings at the London Film Festival, Los Javis thanked audiences for their support, saying the recognition was “particularly meaningful” as the film prepares to reach a wider audience.
Blending romance, history and poetry, La Bola Negra is shaping up to be one of the year’s most talked-about international releases.
