This autumn/winter we will be seeing the phenomenal return of the tartan in the many explorative forms of t-shirts, coats, trousers and even bags. The red colour still remains intact, although other colours have been explored and used. Looking rough and edgy, this season’s tartan will certainly make a big statement when layering up in the cold.

With its rebellious roots, it is said that tartan was banned in Scotland where it had first originated. Associated with the army, the 1970’s punk and grunge era and mostly with Vivienne Westwood, tartan is considered to be very British, very urban and very raw. The edgy checked pattern has a masculine aspect to it, but still remains a favourite with females because of the tailored fitting which creates a perfect silhouette.

Fashion designers have already used the runway to show off this season’s statement pieces and patterns. Mulberry, Givenchy and Versace are a few designers who have used tartan for their A/W ’13 collection.

High-street shops have followed and created their own replicas of the remarkable print. Topshop, H&M, Primark and many other high-street shops have unveiled their collections in store, which all includes tartan, monochrome and PU trims. With its wintery feel and warm colours, these new designs are perfect and stylish to wear during the cold months, and to also look effortlessly cool in.

Wear an oversized jumper, tartan leggings from Topshop and biker boots to stay on trend with this season’s fashion. Looking mean and edgy are essential styles this winter.
