Cut Copy and RÜFÜS at The Forum

Cut Copy and RÜFÜS at The Forum | Live review

It was all about the EDM at The Forum last night, as Cut Copy played their last UK date on a whirlwind world tour, supported by fellow aussie dance fiends, RÜFÜS.

Long-time fans of Cut Copy, RÜFÜS took to the stage at the ungodly hour of 8pm – but despite the early set time succeeded in gearing the audience up for a night of hands-in-the-air electronic euphoria.

In a short set of songs from their album Atlas, RÜFÜS proved their dance credibility with expert bass lines, solid beats and no-frills attitude. Take Me was a clear crowd favourite, igniting the dance spirit in an audience high on anticipation. Scattered around the set were moments of intriguing experimentation, particularly on Desert Night, which ended their set in a symphony of strobes.

With the audience suitably warmed up and ready to party, Cut Copy took to the stage and immediately lifted the gig to another level, with psychedelic visuals providing a backdrop to the band’s energetic performance. Frontman Dan Whitford conducted the crowd through track after track, getting their fingers in the air and feet off the ground just in time for the beat to drop.

Playing a mix of old and new material, Cut Copy’s live performance brought their Kraftwerk elements together with a much rockier sound. So Haunted and Hearts on Fire had a heavier edge than the recorded versions, and Out There on the Ice and Lights and Music demonstrated that Cut Copy really are a band best seen live. Their showmanship was near perfect, and the crowd were completely immersed from start to finish in the hypnotic light show and frantic vibe.

It’s not hard to see why Cut Copy have such a huge following – they are the vibrant face of electronic dance music, bringing a euphoric energy and eye-watering visual experience to their live performance that really puts them a cut above in the EDM scene.
