London Burning Theatre Festival brings immersive art, black comedy and experimental performance to Hoxton Hall

From a VR performance and an interactive meditation on death to puppetry, opera and black comedy, Hoxton Hall will become a playground for experimental art this September as London Burning Theatre Festival presents As We All Lay Dying.

Taking place across two days, the festival brings theatre, film, sound, installation and immersive performance together around questions of life, death and endurance. Its programme takes inspiration from William Faulkner’s 1924 poem The Marble Faun, responding to its ideas while looking at how people survive – and attempt to remake – the worlds they inherit.

Saturday is devoted to installations and participatory work spread throughout the venue. Audiences can encounter Before the Gesture, an exhibition examining presence and absence through interactive installations, sculpture and sound, alongside workshops including Welcome to my Death, VR performance Double Manifestation and a series of artist performances and talks.

Sunday turns Hoxton Hall’s Main Hall over to an eclectic programme beginning with a selection of short films before moving through live performance. Highlights range from Theatre Lab Company’s black comedy The Last Supper Club and puppetry piece Echo of the Moon to immersive theatre work Black Ash, folk music, audiovisual performance and Cosmology in Recognition, which combines dance theatre and opera.

Rather than booking individual shows, visitors buy a day pass and can move through the programme, making the weekend an opportunity to sample forms of performance they might not usually encounter in a conventional theatre visit.
