Indie-rock band Sunset Sons played King’s Cross’ venue Scala last night, where the four members performed a quality set to a packed-out room. Despite their British and Australian nationality, the group have their roots in the French Alps, where they started out as a cover band while they worked as chalet staff. With a large repertoire of songs but no album to speak of as of yet, they’re now on their first world tour, set to open for the Imagine Dragons UK and European tour, starting in October.
From the get-go, it was clear that the band were akin in both sound and appearance to early Kings of Leon, with frontman Rory Williams swapping the electric guitar out for a portable keyboard. Williams, tall, tattooed and predictably lumberjack-esque in appearance, holds a strong stage-presence. The sold-out show opened with Know My Name, placed closely in order to the highlight of the evening, the Mumford and Sons-inspired Medicine.
The audience at Scala was relatively mature, aged roughly between 30 and 40, but reacted with a youthful intensity to Blondie, leading straight into unreleased track September Song; it was a pleasant surprise to hear the band’s sound evolving. The clear crowd favourite was the punchy guitar-heavy Remember, eliciting cheers towards the end of the set, which closed with On the Road.
Sunset Sons put on a solid, enjoyable performance with a well-thought-out set list, and certainly did not go unappreciated by their growing fan-base at this concert. With an upcoming tour – and hopefully an album to be released in the near future – it seems that this indie four-piece are about to take the UK by storm.
