The witching season is almost upon us, as Halloween encroaches with the sinister air of a dark and malevolent force. Halloween holiday means less in the UK than it does in America, British citizens still enjoy nothing more than cuddling up on the sofa with their better halves and watching a classic horror movie. In fact, your only issue may be selecting which films to enjoy during Halloween night. We have at least attempted to make the selection process easier, however, by shortlisting our top three.

Halloween

As the name suggests, this is the iconic Halloween film and one that remains synonymous with the holiday. While it spawned a successful franchise that has produced multiple films, it is the original that remains a cult classic with horror fans from around the world. John Carpenter’s simple and atmospheric tale about an escaped masked killer is tense and terrifying in equal measure, while its haunting soundtrack also does a great deal to reinforce an impending sense of dread that encompasses viewers.

The Haunting

For horror fans and Halloween enthusiasts who enjoy classic films, The Haunting is the ideal movie of choice. Undoubtedly a film to watch under the covers with the lights off (or at least dimmed), this is one of the most atmospheric and eerily sinister movies in history. This is a picture that has it all, from sinister music and lighting to the kind of special effects that excite the mind rather than overwhelm it. The absence of blood only makes the film more haunting and reinforces the excellent work of the writers.

Night of the Living Dead

Is there anything scarier than the living dead? We would suggest not, and this is why zombies make a regular appearance on every Halloween television schedule around the world. For true fans of this genre, the classic 1968 hit Night of the Living Dead remains a cult movie that transcends the market and remains as frightening today as it did upon its release. Even a simple premise and limited effects seem to work in the film’s favour, as viewers feel the dread, horror and sense of terror that engulfs are heroes and heroines in the movie itself.
