The Dark of Night

Robin Wright directs this short noir pastiche, set in a diner, from a Denise Meyers script. It’s frankly difficult to see what the point is. As a satire, there’s nothing new – someone at least says, “scram”. And as a genuinely surprising thriller, well – you can spot a forthcoming split throat a mile off. The monochrome effect isn’t particularly effective or atmospheric, the acting is a set of broad hard boiled clichés and the most famous American gangster of the period is the punchline. The best that can be said is that it is over in less than ten minutes.
