Christmas 2017: Five film releases to watch over Christmas

‘Tis the season to be merry and miserable, to eat good food and tell bad jokes, to unwrap presents and greet people you hate. But if you’re sick of all the above, you could grab your coat and pop into the cinema for the brilliant selection of releases out this Christmas. Here’s a list of five movies currently showing – either to take your family to, or to avoid them altogether. Happy Christmas!

Paddington 2

If there’s one film for all ages on this list, it’s Paddington 2. The bear’s second adventure is filled with exuberant characters, beautiful CGI, and no shortage of comedy (worthy of Buster Keaton). Kids, as well as adults, are at a loss if they’ve not seen it yet.

Paddington 2 is released nationwide on 10th November 2017.

The Man Who Invented Christmas

What better way to kick off Christmas than to learn about its cultural creation? The Man Who Invented Christmas is a fanciful exploration into the mind of Charles Dickens (played by Dan Stevens) as he writes A Christmas Carol. It’s a must for bookworms and Christmas-lovers.

The Man Who Invented Christmas is released nationwide on 1st December 2017.

The Disaster Artist

The story behind the “worst movie ever made” is the best comedy of the last few years. James Franco has moved on from crass humour to mature and silly brilliance in The Disaster Artist. As well as being rib-crushingly hilarious, the film gives a poignant message about art and artists. It’s harder to make movies than you think. Even bad ones.

The Disaster Artist is released nationwide on 8th December 2017.

Stronger

On first glance, this may be a dark choice for Christmas. It tells the story of Jeff Bauman, a deli-counter assistant who lost his legs in the Boston Bombings. But despite his trauma, Jeff (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) has a wicked sense of humour that carries the story. The film is a reminder, appropriate for this time of year, that ordinary people can and do overcome the worst.

Stronger is released nationwide on 8th December 2017.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

After the resurgence of the series in 2015, viewers have been waiting with salivating mouths for the next chapter. Although the plot has been kept under wraps, with only small allusions in the trailers, The Last Jedi is sure to be the cinematic event of the year. And there are Porgs. You gotta love the Porgs.

The Last Jedi is released nationwide on 14th December 2017
